Lincoln Avenue Street End Pier
The Lincoln Avenue Street End Project will advance planning for public waterfront access and improve pedestrian safety. The proposed improvements build off of a NYCDOT series of pedestrian amenity and traffic calming improvements along the vital neighborhood armature of Lincoln Avenue. Lincoln Avenue intersects with several major corridors that serve thousands of neighborhood pedestrians, including NYCHA’s Mitchel and Patterson Houses and numerous small businesses along the 138th St. commercial strip. At the waterfront street end, climate-ready shore and street improvements are particularly needed, given the proximity to the DREAM Charter School, a hub for hundreds of neighborhood children and families.
The proposed improvements include:
Advancing our current work to activate the Lincoln Avenue street end for public recreational use and future waterfront access, including using adjacent lands to provide access to an Eco Dock and to catalyze future opportunities to connect to a bio barge.
Streetlane crossing improvements at Lincoln Avenue, including above ground tree planters as part of the Walking Forest.
Heat mitigation and air quality improvements through increased canopy on the shoreline, piloted through the Walking Forest.
A gathering green at the shoreline, approximately 500 Square Feet. This site will serve as a social and resilience hub for monitoring air and water quality. The site is strategic as an intersection between the pedestrian armature of Lincoln Avenue and the industrial traffic activities of CSX, Waste Management, and other industrial operators.
